Outstanding Service Award

In addition to the financial support provided to the 10 affiliated sporting sections each year through the trading profits of the Windy Hill Venue the Essendon Football Club is also very pleased to make available an outstanding service award to the Sporting Sections. This is a non-sporting achievement award and is intended for someone who has made a valuable contribution to their club which can quite often go unnoticed.

I’m pleased to announce that the award for the past year goes to Gary O’Brien. Gary or as he is known affectionately “Goblin”, has been involved with our Baseball club for the previous 38 years approx.

Edwards Family Continues To Excel

For the past 42 years, the Edwards family has provided Essendon Baseball Club with an incredible array of talented baseball players and fine leaders.

The Bendigo-bred family has produced some of the biggest and best names in EBC history including an incredible three Life Members, (Russell, Brendan, and John), two club coaches (Russell and John), one President (Russell), three MVP’s (Russell, John, and Mark), three ABL players (Brendan, John, and Mitch), four state representatives (Russell, Brendan, John, and Mitch), and four Australian representatives (Russell, Brendan, John, and Mitch).

And now, two professional players!

Mitch, the youngest of the Edwards clan currently playing baseball, has just followed in his father’s footsteps by signing a Minor League contract. EBC has received the fantastic news that Mitch has been secured by the Philadelphia Phillies. (John, Mitch’s dad, signed with the Twins).

Mitch is the son of John, grandson of Russell, and cousin of Brendan and Mark. He spent much of his formative years playing junior baseball at Essendon and holding the important position of batboy for the Senior Team! He started T-Ball as a six-year-old and ended his junior career at EBC at Under 12 level when he followed his dad to Fitzroy when John took on the role as Fitzroy Club Coach.

Now a resident of Canberra, Mitch represented Canberra Cavalry at ABL level at the tender age of 17 before moving into a more senior position as a key player on the Sydney Blue Sox team last summer.

Baseball aside, Mitch has had to handle his share of challenges growing up and EBC is ecstatic that he has grown into a fine young man with a bright future. We wish him every success in his chosen career.
