Graeme Lloyd

Graeme Lloyd – Essendon to Milwaukee and Beyond

At what stage in an individual’s life is his destiny determined? Is it when he is conceived, with his potential being decided by the combination of his genes? Is it when he is spending his formative years at school and with his parents? Or is it something else?

In the case of Graeme Lloyd, Australia’s first ever Major League winning pitcher, we like to think that the years spent in our junior program may have contributed in some small way towards him becoming Australia’s most successful baseball export ever. From the time that he arrived at the Club as a skinny 11 year old, everyone who saw him play knew that this was a special talent. Blessed with an outstanding arm and great hitting ability (perhaps you should head the National League Lloydy!) it was apparent very early that he was destined for an exciting senior career. Just how exciting it would turn out to be, none of us could tell. Graeme remained with Essendon through virtually all his junior years. We like to think that people such as John Pate, Leigh Mclntyre, Phil DeLosa and David Patton (to name just a few) all helped him on the path that would ultimately lead to the mound in Milwaukee’s County Stadium. In those years with Essendon he led the Club to Premiership wins, represented the State on a number of occasions and won several Best and Fairest awards. This year, his first in the majors, he posted an imposing set of statistics as a relief pitcher. The tall left hander appeared in 59 games (the most for his team), and finished with an E.R.A. of 2.85. Only a handful of other pitchers in the Majors finished with a comparable E.R.A. from as many starts, and they are all making millions of dollars per year! Graeme’s successes have been a great source of inspiration for the juniors at Essendon. His photo in a junior team, hanging on the wall of our Clubrooms, is often referred to by junior coaches when they are looking for a role model to demonstrate just what can be achieved through this great game. It has taken us 100 years to have our first Essendon boy make it to the ‘Majors’. With Graeme as a role model, and the junior programs that we now have in place in the Club, I don’t think we will have to wait another 100 years for our next Major Leaguer Wow, one only has to look at Graeme’s history to really appreciate the levels he achieved.
